What Membership Do I Qualify For?

WHO MAY JOIN THE INSTITUTION?

The answer is very simple. Any person who is involved actively, or is studying to become involved, or who is interested in mechanical engineering, or any other allied or associated field of engineering or science may apply to become a member. If you are sure which membership category to apply for, simply click here and proceed with your online application. If you need more assurance and information, please read the criteria below.

Applicants are graded according to their levels of education, experience and responsibility, and the annual subscriptions vary according to the grade awarded. 


 

 The various grades of membership are currently:

 

Student
Annual subscription: Free

Qualification

Age: 18 to 25

Studying an ECSA-accredited mechanical engineering qualification. 

Not Necessary Proposed by Head of Dept. at tertiary educational institution.

 

 

Graduate
Annual subscription: R760 (incl. VAT)

Qualification

Age: 21+

A person who holds an ECSA-accredited qualification in mechanical engineering

Less than 3 years in any field Proposed by corporate member. Seconded by corporate member.

 

Associate  
Annual subscription: R980 (incl. VAT)

Age: 25+

A person who, by reason of training and experience, is capable of and interested in rendering a service or contributing to the field of mechanical engineering and The Institution.

Not Necessary Proposed by corporate member. Seconded by corporate member

 

 

Member
Annual subscription: R1550 (incl. VAT)

A person who holds an ECSA-accredited qualification in mechanical engineering, or who is registered with ECSA as a professional in any category. 

3 Years in any field Proposed by corporate member. Seconded by corporate member

 

Fellow
Annual subscription: R1550 (incl. VAT)

A person who has been a Member of SAIMechE for at least 15 consecutive years. The person shall be proposed and seconded by Fellows.

As appropriate Proposed by Fellow.
Seconded by Fellow.

 

Honorary Fellow
Annual subscription: Honorary

An Honorary Fellow shall be a person intimately connected with mechanical engineering science or practice whom The Institution specially desires to honour for exceptionally important services rendered to The Institution or to mechanical engineering.

As per citation Elected by unanimous decision of Council

 

 

Company Affiliate       
Annual subscription: less than 20 employees R3680 (incl. VAT), more than 20 employees R14800 (incl.VAT)

Registered company or partnership involved with mechanical engineering. 
At least one employee shall be either a corporate member of SAIMechE or registered as a professional with ECSA.

Associated with mechanical engineering. Proposed by corporate member. Seconded by corporate member
