We are pleased to announce that the 2017 John Orr Memorial Lecture will be presented by Attie and Uys Jonker. The topic is: "Soaring to Success - The Realisation of an Aviation Dream”. The lecture will take us on an incredible journey from concept through to the production of a world class sailplane (glider). The lecture will highlight the intricate blend of complex aeronautical and mechanical design with a largely manual manufacture and assembly process.

"Soaring to Success - The Realisation of an Aviation Dream”

by Prof Attie and Uys Jonker

SAIMechE hosts the prestigious John Orr Memorial Lecture each year to commemorate the achievements of Professor John Orr (1870 – 1954) in engineering education in South Africa. The Lecture is traditionally hosted in conjunction with Wits University. The history of this prestigious lecture dates back to 1961 when the first lecture was initiated to honour Professor Orr.

Durban Screening

Our KZN Branch will provide a local screening of the event whereby the lecture will be projected onto a big screen. Refreshments will be served after the event. Members are eligible to claim 0.2 CPD points for attendance.

"Soaring to Success - The Realisation of an Aviation Dream

The 2017 John Orr Memorial Lecture titled “Soaring to Success - The Realisation of an Aviation Dream” will showcase the incredibly inspiring story of Jonker Sailplanes, and will be presented by founding brothers, Attie and Uys Jonker.

The lecture will take us on an incredible journey from concept through to the production of a world class sailplane (glider). The lecture will highlight the intricate blend of complex aeronautical and mechanical design with a largely manual manufacture and assembly process. The lecture is bound to captivate and inspire anyone with an interest in mechanical engineering.

Together with partner Johan Bosman, Attie and Uys founded Jonker Sailplanes with the single-minded purpose of producing the best sailplanes in their class in the world. Pitted against established European manufacturers, Jonker Sailplanes  astounded the international market with the success of their first production model, the JS-1 “Revelation”.

Drawing its name from the “revelation” of how much work was actually involved in its design and production, the JS-1 has been a revelation of how passion and engineering can combine to produce an internationally recognised and multi-award winning sailplane. The final result has best performance in its class, superb handling, pristine workmanship, outstanding safety, and surprising affordability.

Jonker Sailplanes have produced well over one hundred and twenty sailplanes within two decades from their base in Potchefstroom, primarily for top international pilots. They are the only type-certified aircraft manufacturer in South Africa, and recently launched a completely redesigned sailplane, the JS3.

About Attie and Uys:

Attie and Uys grew up in a home where the practical application of maths and science was the norm. Their father was a maths and science teacher who, in his spare time, built what was to become the family glider. Both are avid international competition pilots, and are members of the South African National Soaring Team.

Prof Attie Jonker (B.Sc (Maths & Applied Maths), B.Eng (Mech), M.Eng (Mech), Pr.Eng, Ph.D (Eng)) is Senior Lecturer at North-West University's School of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. He matriculated at Potchefstroom Gymnasium with 8 distinctions followed by the degrees B.Sc maths, B.Eng, M.Eng and Ph.D. His expertise includes finite element methods, strength of materials, composite materials, machine design, aerodynamics, aircraft design, structural design and flight testing.

Uys Jonker matriculated at Potchefstroom Gymnasium in 1989 and was Dux Student of the year. He studied at the North West University where he completed a B.Sc (Mathematics) in 1992 and a B.Eng (Mechanical) in 1995, both with honours. From 1995 to 1999 he worked as Engineer on the Rooivalk Attack Helicopter and Cheetah programs at Denel Aviation. Uys holds a Glider Pilot's Licence, a Commercial Pilot's Licence (fixed wing) and is currently the Class I Certification Test Pilot at Jonker Sailplanes.
