NEWSFLASH!!! JOHN ORR LECTURE 2008
“Reliable Products and Structures” by Professor M Neil James DSc(Eng), DTech(Honoris Causa), PhD, BSc(Eng), CEng, FIMMM
SAIMechE historically hosted this very prestigious “John Orr Memorial Lecture” each year, but for various reasons, there hasn’t been such a lecture since 2001. The Lecture is intended to commemorate the achievements of Professor John Orr (1870 – 1954) in engineering education in South Africa and it is given, wherever possible, by an engineer of international standing. The history of this prestigious lecture dates back to 1961 when the first lecture was initiated to honor Professor Orr.
The John Orr Lecturer for 2008 will be Professor Neil James. Professor James is the Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University of Plymouth. This lecture with the topic "Reliable Products and Structures" is intended to be both interesting and informative and will consider the advances made over the last 80 years in understanding of the fracture behaviour of materials under strain (load) and in the interaction between design, processing/fabrication and performance. This understanding coupled with advanced monitoring and testing techniques, enables us to construct and operate very sophisticated and cost-effective structures with statistically reliable probability of failure.
