This course is aimed at an engineer who wants to explore stainless steel as a material of choice for manufacturing, fabrication, building and construction projects. The learners will acquire knowledge equipping them to select the appropriate grade for application, environment and purpose while considering the life cycle costing impact of stainless steel.

Carries 1 CPD point from SAIMechE.

After attending the course, the learners should be able to::

  • Know about Sassda and the role it plays in the industry.
  • Understand what makes stainless steel unique.
  • Understand the basic advantages and classifications of stainless steel.
  • Identify the main classifications of stainless steel as well as the basic grades, composition, properties and uses of each.
  • Understand the principles explained in the “Web”.
  • Identify the top 20 alloys.
  • Know what corrosion is, differentiate between the different types of corrosion, how each type affects stainless steel  and how to avoid it
  • Life cycle costing and short term expediency v/s lowest long term cost.
  • Understand the physical and mechanical properties of stainless steel.
  • Know the difference between type, form and finish of stainless steel
  • Be familiar with the SA primary producer manufacturing process.
  • Understand the difference between flat & long products, castings and tube & pipe.
  • Identify different contaminants of stainless steel.
  • Be familiar with the process of the restoration of the passive layer.
  • Understand how to clean, store and maintain stainless steel.
