AFRICAN SOLAR DRIVE

The African Solar Drive, proudly supported by Mitsubishi SA, has been planned to function as an educational tool to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to schools, students, researchers and industry and highlight how others can become involved in either research or studying for a career in the fields of science and engineering and specifically relating to alternative energy.

A road show delegation will be travelling through North West South Africa into Namibia and returning via Botswana.  One of the objectives will be to test iLanga II on national roads  As far as we are aware, iLanga II will be the first solar powered electric vehicle to venture across the border into sub-Saharan Africa.  The journey sees us covering 4000km.

Students will collect and analyse data of how the car performs while raising awareness of green technology through public lectures and school visits along the route. The analysis of the collected data will also be used to optimize the performance of the vehicle to prepare the car and team for their attempt to set the solar only land-speed record later this year, as well as preparing for the 2016 South African Solar Challenge.

The community engagement team will conduct an interactive visit with schools along the route while collecting various data for research purposes through our collaboration with the UJ departments of Humanities, Development and Internationalisation.

The public lectures are currently scheduled as follows:

09 Jun                Johannesburg – University of Johannesburg

18 Jun                 Kimberley – Collaborating with Sol Plaatje University

19-20 Jun            Upington – Collaborating with Northern Cape Provincial Government

22 Jun                 Windhoek – Collaborating with Polytechnic of Namibia

28-29 Jun            Gaborone – in progress

We are pleased to advise that the High Commissions of Namibia, Botswana and the Embassy of the Netherlands are in support of the drive.  Should you wish to be part of this journey, please do not hesitate to contact us.  Please also feel free to extend the lecture invitation to your network.
