The 2013 John Orr Memorial
Lecture was a huge success. The Lecture was presented by Clem Sunter, South
Africa’s leading and most well-known global strategist and scenario planner.
The topic was: "The World and South
Africa beyond 2013 - The latest scenarios, flags and
probabilities.” Clem covered these three issues under this topic:
1. How to look at
the future like a "foxy" engineer; 2. The latest
global economic scenarios; and 3. The possibilities
for South Africa.
The Lecture was most interesting and, as always,
Clem was delightfully entertaining and held the audience captive throughout his
presentation. The venue was even overfilled with guests eager to listen to Mr
Sunter.
The Lecture was streamed live, with local screenings at some of
our branches. The recording of the Lecture is available at the following

We
recommend a ‘decent’ internet connection for viewing. Some of the photos taken
at the Lecture can be viewed here.
Please feel free to post and share your comments here regarding Clem's presentation.

Superb! Entertaining and insightful. Thank you and congratulations Clem and SAIMechE for a wonderful lecture. I have already shared the link with a few friends and colleagues and cannot wait for the debates we will have in the months to come on similar topics such as this.
A friend of mine who practices as an Actuary has always informed us to plan for the future, not your own future, but of one's "childrens' childrens" future. I guess he must have been talking about using the skills of scenario planning and looking out for the flags. I guess a couple of Clem's books will be finding their way to my bookshelf soon.
PS, Vaughan, please get Clem to deliver a similar TedTalk discussion (the major constraint been 20min time limit I guess). And lastly, we should do more to promote the efforts of our great minds such as Siyabulela Xuza and similarly supporting SME's in our own communities.
It was an absolute pleasure to host Clem Sunter for the lecture. He is one of the most relaxed and accommodating people I have met, and freely shares his world outlook with anyone who cares to pay attention. I can't wait for his discussion with Julius Malema.
