A response from the public sector has been government is aware of the skills capacity challenges in the sector, but finds it difficult to attract engineering professionals into their structures. As a result, infrastructure ministries and local government have sought alternatives, one of which is to source engineers from Cuba to fill technical posts.
The five biggest engineering associations are therefore carrying out a general survey to assess sentiment of engineering professionals wishing to explore careers in the public sector. The participating voluntary associations in this survey are The South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE), the South African Institute of Electric Engineers (SAIEE), the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering, Consulting Engineers South Africa and the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA).
