As the technological choices of electricity supply changes into the hands of the consumers, giant electricity utilities are going to find it much harder to deliver electricity to their customers at cost-effective prices.
This is the view of Dr Steve Lennon, who delivered the annual John Orr lecture, hosted by the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering at Wits University on Wednesday, 11 November.
Lennon, former executive for sustainability at Eskom, and current Managing Director of Shaduvan, said utilities around the world will have to change their business models as rapidly evolving technologies increasingly put the power in the hands of the consumers, which allows their customers to become their own competitors.
