We are pleased to announce that we are now offering all our members the ability to demonstrate and verify their SAIMechE membership standing in real time using the Privyseal digital accreditation service.

What is Digital Accreditation?

• The digital accreditation service provides you with a dynamic digital seal, called a Privyseal, and a detailed Certificate of Membership.

• Your Privyseal and linked Certificate of Membership will verify your SAIMechE membership grade and status.

• Your Privyseal can be inserted into your email signature, website and social media profiles.

• Neither your Privyseal nor Certificate of Membership will display if there is a problem with your records at SAIMechE.

Effective immediately all SAIMechE members in good standing can register for free for their individual Privyseal and Certificate of Membership. The “Getting Started Guide” will walk you through the registration process and provide you with more details on PrivySeal. We recommend that you sign up as soon as possible to join your fellow SAIMechE members in reaping the benefits of this new free service. The process of signing up will only take you between 5-10 minutes.

Why should I use my Privyseal?

• Your Privyseal is a powerful way to prove your status and good standing in real-time.

• Your Privyseal confirms that your status is real and has been evaluated against SAIMechE’s membership records.

• Your Privyseal assists to decrease fraud, loss of certificates and the associated risks of poor service and costly mistakes.
          

What about my old SAIMechE Membership Certificate?

• Effective immediately, the only way to demonstrate and verify your SAIMechE membership in real time will be using Privyseal.

• Those who still have the old certificates can either return to them to the National office, destroy them, or keep them for sentimental or historical value.

Prof Esther Akinlabi, Head of Department, Mechanical Engineering Science will oversee the chapter, with assistance from staff mentors Dr Anton Maneschijn, Dr Sunita Kruger and Dr Barend Botha.

The 7 March 2016 launch event was a huge success with more than a hundred Mechanical Engineering Science students attending.

The President of SAIMechE, Mr Kudzai Nyangoni, described how participation in the Student Chapter can benefit the students in preparing them for their careers. Student membership is free of charge for Mechanical Engineering students.

AFRICAN SOLAR DRIVE

The African Solar Drive, proudly supported by Mitsubishi SA, has been planned to function as an educational tool to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to schools, students, researchers and industry and highlight how others can become involved in either research or studying for a career in the fields of science and engineering and specifically relating to alternative energy.

A road show delegation will be travelling through North West South Africa into Namibia and returning via Botswana.  One of the objectives will be to test iLanga II on national roads  As far as we are aware, iLanga II will be the first solar powered electric vehicle to venture across the border into sub-Saharan Africa.  The journey sees us covering 4000km.

Students will collect and analyse data of how the car performs while raising awareness of green technology through public lectures and school visits along the route. The analysis of the collected data will also be used to optimize the performance of the vehicle to prepare the car and team for their attempt to set the solar only land-speed record later this year, as well as preparing for the 2016 South African Solar Challenge.

The community engagement team will conduct an interactive visit with schools along the route while collecting various data for research purposes through our collaboration with the UJ departments of Humanities, Development and Internationalisation.
