SAIMechE exists to serve the interests and needs of its members, to advance the science and practice of mechanical engineering, and to promote high standards in the profession. Member benefits includes, but is not limited:

Networking and the sharing of knowledge

The Institution provides a platform for engineers to meet and network. Through meeting others, Members have access to the knowledge pool available within SAIMechE, and can remain informed on any new developments and get help to resolve challenges.

Publications

SA Mechanical Engineer: The Institution's official publication, is distributed to members on a monthly basis. The magazine is also available in digital format for easy reading and sharing articles. Archives of past issues are also available online. 

R&D Journal: The Institution hosts the R&D Journal, a fully accredited research journal with the Department of Higher Education. The R&D Journal is a peer reviewed engineering science journal, published online and is available on the SAIMechE website. The R&D Journal is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).

SAIMechE Torque e-newsletter: is a regular email newsletter dedicated to members of SAIMechE, and is part of our strategy to improve communication between members and the Institution. The newsletter is intended to keep members updated and current with what the Institution is up to, as well as what is happening within the world of engineering. It includes a useful classified section where members can advertise professional services and products.

Branches

There are regional branches across the country that arrange evening lectures, site visits, technical discussions and social events focused on the specific needs of members in the various regions. The interaction between members and Council is via the different branch committees.

ECSA

The Institution proposes the members of the Professional Advisory Committees and interview panels. These panels scrutinize the applications for registration. SAIMechE members qualify for a rebate of fees from ECSA.

Interactive web platform

The website is the primary platform to deliver on the objectives of SAIMechE, and is available to members to access engineering resources relating to issues relevant to them. The platform allows each member to create and manage special interest groups to suit their needs, providing all the necessary group communication and networking tools.

PDP/Mentors

A key focus for SAIMechE is the implementation of a program for Candidate professionals to assist them in developing appropriate professional competencies. The Professional Development Program developed by SAIMechE focuses on the eleven learning outcomes described in ECSA’s various competency standards for professional registration.

Industry visits/seminars/conferences

Industry visits are arranged by the branch committees and include visits to national key points, factories and other industries that are of interest to the members. The Institution also arranges various conferences, often in conjunction with other societies with common interests.

Uphold and maintain the engineering profession

SAIMechE liaises closely with its fellow Voluntary Associations and participates in many representative bodies for voice to government, academia and skills development.
